Major restoration work on the Basilica began in 2020 and is currently underway. The elements to be restored include the masonry, flashings, bell towers and their sound structures, as well as other architectural elements in order to preserve the exterior facade of Notre-Dame and the integrity of the building.


Schedule

The exterior restoration work is divided into 8 phases.

 

Safety Phase (completed)

 

Safety measures on the various facades and pinnacles with the installation of nets.

 

Duration: 1 year
Year of completion: 2018

 


Phase 1 (completed)

 

Restoration of the north facade (Notre-Dame Street), including the three sculptures in the niches of the north facade: the Immaculate Conception (representing Montreal), Saint John the Baptist (representing Quebec), and Saint Joseph (patron saint of Canada).

 

Duration: approximately 18 months
Period: July 2020 to December 2021

 


Phase 2 (completed)

 

Restoration of the west tower (La Persévérance)

 

Approximate duration: 3 years
Period: August 2021 - ongoing
Estimated completion: July 2024

 


Phase 3 (ongoing)

 

Restoration of the east tower (La Tempérance)

 

Approximate duration: 2.5 years
Period: 2024 to 2026
Estimated completion: 2026

 


Phase 4 (upcoming)

 

Restoration of the east facade (Rue Saint-Sulpice), including the exterior staircase area, deformations to the pinnacles, and deterioration of the stones

Restoration of the south façade, including the Notre-Dame-du-Sacré-Cœur chapel
